Peter Kohn's Background

Peter KohnPeter Kohn grew up in a Connecticut based family manufacturing business working summers through high school and college in office, manufacturing and sales functions. He graduated from Babson College in 1979 and worked for his father until 1981 when the business was acquired by Emerson Electric Company, a Fortune 100 industrial equipment manufacturer. Peter was transferred to the division headquarters in Chicago where he held product management, strategic planning and international business development positions.

Peter followed his business mentor to AMF in Richmond, Virginia in 1989 and had responsibility for managing its consumer bowling business and later, the marketing of its Ben Hogan golf brand. In 1995, Peter started Birch Hill Marketing, facilitating brand licensing partnerships for its clients including AMF, Brunswick, Eskimo Pie, Life Fitness and smaller privately-owned businesses.

In 2007, Peter joined Virginia Commonwealth University's Family Business Forum providing educational and interactive learning for its multi-generational family business members and sponsors. He facilitates the Next Generation Leadership Development Group. Peter is also a member of the Family Firm Institute (FFI) and an active member of its Washington, DC Study Group. In 2009 Peter earned a certificate in Family Business Advising from FFI. He is a founding member of the Princeton Family Business Consultants Group; the peer group is comprised of family business consultants who come together to learn and work with leaders in the field.

Peter's real life experience with his family's business and working for both public and large privately-owned companies gives him a unique perspective to help families in business. Peter's real passion is to share his education and experience with the next generation by helping them develop leadership roles in the business and become responsible, engaged members of their families and communities. Peter has the ability to relate well and be respected by multi-generations.

Peter lives in Richmond, Virginia with his wife Jeryl who owns a Dental Practice. They have 2 children and a granddaughter. Peter enjoys gourmet cooking, skiing, tennis and mentoring young people. He has been active in Richmond’s Meals On Wheels and Food Bank programs having served on the board as well as participating on the marketing committee for the combined organization called FeedMore.
